“General Hospital” actress Sonya Eddy passed away on Monday night (December 19) after developing an infection from a non-emergency surgery.
She was 55.
Sonya’s dear friend, Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer, shared the heartbreaking news via social media.
Octavia wrote, “My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her 💔🕊️ My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans.”

Sonya Eddy’s producing partner and close friend, Tyler Ford, told TMZ that the actress underwent a non-emergency surgery on December 9 and she was released from the hospital a few days later on December 11.
Unfortunately, Sonya started to feel ill and returned to the hospital on December 15.
Doctors discovered Sonya had developed a serious infection and unfortunately, it was uncontainable.
She was placed on life support and passed away on Monday night.
ABC released the following statement to Page Six:
‘General Hospital’ is sad to confirm the passing of actress Sonya Eddy, who embodied her character … the tough but compassionate, head nurse, Epiphany Johnson … and immediately became a fan favorite and beloved member of our ‘GH’ family when she joined the show in 2006.
In addition to “General Hospital,” Sonya Eddy also appeared in TV shows and films such as “Seinfeld,” “Patch Adams,” “Reba,” “Monk,” “Joan of Arcadia,” “CSI,” “Glee,” “Castle” and “Fresh Off The Boat.”
My sincerest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Sonya Eddy dearly.
May she rest in paradise.
