Serena Williams is making waves beyond the tennis court. The 23-time Grand Slam champion has officially joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s first Canadian team, set to debut in 2026.
A Historic Move For Women’s Sports
The Toronto Tempo announced Williams’ involvement on Monday, marking a significant moment for the franchise and women’s basketball. Williams expressed her excitement, stating:
I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo.
This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes.
I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity.
Her involvement aligns with her longstanding commitment to elevating women’s sports and creating opportunities for female athletes on and off the court.
Serena Williams’ Role With The Toronto Tempo
Williams will be working closely with Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures, to build a strong foundation for the team.
According to the Tempo, her role will extend beyond ownership, as she will have creative input in future jersey designs and exclusive merchandise collaborations.
However, her investment is pending WNBA league approval.
On Instagram, Williams shared her enthusiasm, posting:
“New court, new game. 🏀 I am incredibly excited to join the @torontotempo as the team’s newest owner.”

Tempo President Teresa Resch praised Williams’ impact on women’s sports and business, saying:
Serena is a champion.
She’s set the bar for women in sport, business, and beyond.
Her commitment to using that success to create opportunities for other women is inspiring.
In a Q&A session on the team’s Instagram, Williams shared her passion for sports and empowering women:
I love sports, and I’m so grateful for everything I gained from competing on the court.
I’m thrilled to be able to play a role in creating those opportunities for more women.
Williams also expressed her love for Toronto, citing its culture, food, and passionate sports community as key reasons for her involvement.
What’s Next For The Toronto Tempo?
The Toronto Tempo unveiled their official logo last year, featuring an italicized “T” inside a circle with dynamic lines representing the five players on the court and the fan base.
The team will play their inaugural season at Coca-Cola Coliseum in 2026.
As Canada’s first WNBA team, the Tempo aims to set a championship standard, and with Serena Williams as part of the ownership, the franchise is already off to a historic start.
Congrats to Serena out here making boss moves!
