This one hurts. Robert Cosby Jr., the 23 year old son of Mary Cosby from “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” has passed away.

Authorities in Salt Lake City confirmed they responded to a possible overdose call on Monday, February 23, involving a 23 year old male in full medical arrest.

As a parent, I cannot even imagine the weight of this kind of loss.

It is the kind of phone call that changes everything.

Mary Cosby and Robert Sr. shared a statement with TMZ following the heartbreaking loss of their son:

Our beloved son, Robert Jr., has been called home to the Lord.

Though our hearts ache deeply, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing that he is finally at peace.

We are grateful for your prayers and ask that you continue to lift our family up as we trust in the Lord to carry us through this time of sorrow.

A Public Battle With Addiction

If you’ve been watching RHOSLC, you know Robert Jr. bravely opened up about his struggle with addiction during season 5.

In a deeply emotional conversation with his mother, he shared that he began experimenting with drugs at 16 after trying Xanax at a party.

Over time, that experimentation escalated. He admitted to abusing prescription medications like Adderall and OxyContin, sometimes taking as many as ten pills at once.

He later revealed he had also tried heroin and struggled with suicidal thoughts.

“I felt like a stain,” he said at the time. “I just felt like this world wasn’t for me.”

In December 2024, Mary shared that her son completed a month long rehab program and had come out “a new person.”

There was hope. There was progress. And like so many families navigating addiction, there were also setbacks.

Robert Jr.’s journey included several run ins with the law, including DUI charges and a series of arrests in late 2025 tied to domestic and property related incidents.

He ultimately pleaded guilty to multiple charges and was sentenced to 36 months of probation and community service.

He had been released from jail on Feb. 3.

At the season 6 reunion, Mary said something that now feels especially haunting.

“I’d rather him be there than dead.”

Those words hit differently today.

Andy Cohen Reacts

Andy Cohen reacted to the news shortly after it broke, writing that it was “devastatingly sad news out of SLC” and calling it every parent’s worst nightmare.

And he is right.

This is not about reality TV drama.

This is about a mother who loved her son and a young man who was fighting battles many people never saw coming.
