Kirk Franklin is trending in the streets of Twitter after releasing his emotional and heartbreaking documentary, Father’s Day.
The 35-minute film follows the 19X Grammy Award-winning gospel star as he learns who his real biological father is at the age of 53.
Kirk Franklin’s biological mother, whom he hadn’t seen in 23 years, has always maintained a man named Dwight Allen was his father.
In 2017, Kirk reunited with Dwight, forgave him, and buried him six months later when Dwight passed away from a terminal illness.
Kirk Franklin Learns Richard Hubbard Is His Father
When Kirk began working on his new album, a singer he had hired from his hometown told him she met a man named Richard Hubbard at a funeral who said he once dated Debra.
Rumors began to swirl that Mr. Ricky may be Kirk’s father, so he submitted a DNA test.
The results, which said Richard Hubbard was a 99.9 percent match for paternity, rocked Kirk Franklin’s world at the core.
To live over half a century with somebody who lived in the same city as you…I suffered so much as a young man without guidance. I struggled with love, intimacy, faith, identity. And to know that the answer was less than 10 minutes away.
Despite two DNA tests confirming Richard Hubbard is Kirk’s father, his mother refused to accept the results and said they were wrong.
She’s just very adamant that this man is not my father.
It appeared that at that moment, Kirk realized his mother was at the root of much of the turmoil he has experienced in his life.
I have not heard or talked to her since the second test result.
Kerrion Franklin
“Father’s Day: A Kirk Franklin Story” also shows him reuniting with his estranged son, Kerrion Franklin.
The singer hadn’t seen or spoken to his son in two years but reached out to share the news about Mr. Richard.
He asked his son, “Do you want to know about what I’m about to share with you?”
Kerrion, who is visibly hurt, responded, “It already hurts and I don’t even know what it is! Every text message I’ve sent you hasn’t been responded to.”
Kirk Franklin somberly told his son, “Well, I know we got a lot of other things that we have to deal with. But, I have something that I think that when you find this out it’s going to be life-changing.”
Kerrion was blown away to learn about his real grandfather.
The news served as a bridge for Kirk and his son to reconcile and reconnect.
The documentary also contains behind-the-scenes footage of Kirk Franklin working on his forthcoming album named, Father’s Day.
