Singer-songwriter K. Michelle has officially signed with BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville, joining a roster that includes stars like Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, and Jason Aldean, as announced on July 29.

A Tennessee native, K. Michelle grew up inspired by a diverse range of artists, from Whitney Houston to The Judds.

Over her career, she has released six albums, including her 2013 debut Rebellious Soul and 2016’s More Issues Than Vogue.

With her 2023 release I’m The Problem marking her final R&B project, K. Michelle is now channeling her musical talents into her debut country album.

She’s already shared songs like “Tennessee” and introduced her alter-ego, Puddin.

K. Michelle’s move to BBR/BMG Nashville aligns with a wave of success for Black country artists.

Recently, Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” topped Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and spent multiple weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100.

This trend was highlighted by Beyoncé’s country-inspired Cowboy Carter project, which celebrated Black country music pioneers like Linda Martell and rising stars such as Willie Jones, Brittney Spencer, and Reyna Roberts.

Beyoncé’s own “Texas Hold ‘Em” also dominated the Hot Country Songs chart for ten weeks.

Last year, K. Michelle contributed to A Tribute to the Judds, performing “Love Can Build a Bridge” alongside Jelly Roll and the Fisk Jubilee Singers.

Their live performance at the 57th annual CMA Awards was a highlight.

Recently, she made her debut at CMA Fest, performing at Nissan Stadium and the Chevy Vibes Stage.

“When we first met K. Michelle, her passion for country music was undeniable,” said Katie Kerkhover, VP of A&R at BMG. “The storytelling in her lyrics is what sets her apart, and it transcends genres.”

Expressing her excitement, K. Michelle stated, “I’ve been ready for this moment. Rebels and Real Outlawz, it’s time! I want to thank my BMG team. As a country girl at heart, I can’t wait to share my country music with you all.”

Taking to social media, K. Michelle wrote:

I signed my FIRST country music record deal. It might not mean anything to you but it means the world to me.

Listen, I’ve always been off trend my whole life.

I’ve Never been in the cool crowd.

It used to hurt but it forced me to move alone, but strong.

Just me my mic, voice, pen, and God.

I kicked, scream, begged, and pleaded to just sing what I wanted.

3 years ago after getting sick and almost losing my life trying to be accepted by culture.

I said f**k it! If i can’t get invited to the party I’ll throw my own and that’s what I did.

I packed up my s**t and moved back home to Tennessee.

I deserve to do what I’m great at. It’s bigger than me.

I represent the weird kids, the misunderstood, the have nots, the overlooked, women and men from all different walks of life.

I am the underdog.

Thank you @bbrmusicgroup @bmg for partnering with me and understanding my vision.

Out of every label I knew IMMEDIATELY where I was going.

I look forward to hitting stages everywhere to introduce the music I grew up on.

A long hard road ahead of me, but I’m equipped for WHATEVER.
