Very sad news is coming out of New York. Isiah Whitlock Jr., the veteran character actor best known for portraying the unforgettable and corrupt state senator Clay Davis on “The Wire,” has passed away.
He was 71.
Variety confirmed that Whitlock passed away on Tuesday.
His manager, Brian Liebman, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, writing:
“It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr. If you knew him, you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.”
Born in Indiana, Whitlock built an extraordinary career as a prolific character actor, leaving an undeniable mark across film, television, and voice work.
He was also a frequent collaborator of Spike Lee, appearing in several of the acclaimed filmmaker’s projects, including BlacKkKlansman, Da 5 Bloods, She Hate Me, 25th Hour, Red Hook Summer, and Chi-Raq.
Across many of his performances, Whitlock became beloved for his instantly recognizable catchphrase, the drawn-out “sheeeeee-it.”
The moment first appeared in She Hate Me and 25th Hour before becoming a signature element of Clay Davis on “The Wire.”
Whitlock once shared that fans would stop him on the street multiple times a day just to hear him say it.
In a perfect full-circle moment, he later played a man obsessed with “The Wire” in the 2011 comedy, Cedar Rapids.
Beyond Baltimore politics, Whitlock’s résumé stretched wide.
He appeared as a doctor in Goodfellas, popped up on “Chappelle’s Show,” and delivered memorable performances in Pieces of April and Enchanted.
He also lent his voice to animated favorites like Cars 3 and Lightyear, with an upcoming role in Pixar’s Hoppers still on the horizon.
On television, Whitlock delivered another standout turn as George Maddox, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, during Seasons 2 through 4 of “Veep,” where his character ran against Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer in the 2016 primaries.
Isiah Whitlock Jr. was one of those actors who elevated every project he touched.
