Demond Wilson, the beloved actor who brought Lamont Sanford to life on “Sanford And Son,” has passed away at age 79, marking the end of an era for one of television’s most iconic sitcoms.

His son confirmed Wilson passed away at his home in Palm Springs on January 30 following complications related to cancer.

Fans across generations are now reflecting on the legacy he leaves behind and the impact he had on Black television history.

Demond Wilson’s Breakthrough On “Sanford And Son”

Demond began acting in the early 1970s, first appearing in an uncredited role in Cotton Comes to Harlem.

He later landed small parts in shows like “All in the Family,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.”

His big break came in 1972 when he was cast as Lamont Sanford opposite Redd Foxx in NBC’s hit sitcom “Sanford And Son.”

The series quickly became NBC’s top-rated show and one of the most-watched programs on television, running successfully from 1972 to 1977 and cementing Wilson as a household name.

Film And Television Career After “Sanford And Son”

After the sitcom ended, Wilson continued working steadily. He starred in “Baby… I’m Back” from 1977 to 1978 and guest-starred in popular series like “The Love Boat” and “Today’s F.B.I.”

He also appeared in films throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Full Moon HighThe Organization, and Dealing: Or the Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick Lost-Bag Blues.

In 1982, Wilson joined “The New Odd Couple” as Oscar Madison, though the series lasted only one season.

Later Roles And Final Screen Appearance

Wilson later returned to the screen in the 1993 film Me and the Kid.

Nearly a decade later, he played Morgan Rivers in the 2000 film Hammerlock and had a brief acting stint on “Girlfriends” between 2004 and 2005.

He stepped away from acting again before making one final return in 2023 with “Eleanor’s Beach,” a series centered on a woman returning home to serve as a juvenile court judge.

The role marked Wilson’s last screen appearance more than 50 years after his first acting credit.
