The series centers around 15-year-old Ella (played by Imani Pullum), a spirited student from Oakland, California, whose life takes a drastic turn after she’s arrested during a protest.
Facing serious jail time, Ella’s fate hangs in the balance—until her well-connected stepmother, Dianne (Christine Horn), steps in to save the day.
However, freedom comes with a price.
To avoid incarceration, Ella must leave behind everything she knows and relocate to Johannesburg, South Africa, to live with her father (Sule Rimi) and stepmother.
Thrust into a world vastly different from her own, Ella struggles to find her footing as she navigates a new life in a foreign land.
