‘Candyman’ Slashes Box Office With $22.4M Opening, Director Nia DaCosta Makes History

Candyman slashed the domestic box office to take the no. 1 spot over the weekend with an impressive $22.4 million debut. 

The Nia DaCosta film earned an additional $5.2 million internationally for a total worldwide opening of $27.6.

Nia has made history as the first Black woman to direct a number one film.

Candyman, which is produced by Jordan Peele, opened in 3,569 theaters and was projected to only bring in $15 million because of moviegoers’ concerns over the delta variant.

The film stars Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, and Colman Domingo.
