I am disappointed to report Brittney Griner will not be coming home for a least another 30 days.
The WNBA star appeared in court on Friday where she learned her pretrial detention in Russia has been extended by one month.
Brittney has been detained in Russia since February after she was found to have a vape cartridge containing oil derived from cannabis in her bag at the airport.
A little over a week ago, the Biden Administration determined Brittney Griner is being wrongfully detained in Russia.
The reclassification is important because it means the United States will work more aggressively to secure her release.
Brittney’s lawyer, Alexander Boykov, told The Associated Press he believed the relatively short extension of the detention indicated the case would come to trial soon.
Boykov said, “We did not receive any complaints about the detention conditions from our client.”
Because of her detention in Russia, Brittney missed her wife’s graduation from law school.
On Saturday, Cherelle Griner took to social media to announce she graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham with her Juris Doctor degree.
Brittney is also missing the WNBA 2022 season.
The league is keeping her in their hearts and minds by placing Brittney’s initials and jersey number (42) will be featured along the sideline of all 12 WNBA courts.
My prayers to Brittney and her family.
I pray she returns home sooner than later.
