The Dupree family is about to shake things up in the world of daytime TV. “Beyond the Gates,” an all-new CBS daytime drama, is set to premiere on February 24, marking history as the first Black soap opera in 35 years since “Generations” ended its run in 1991.
On Monday, December 16, CBS released the first teaser for the groundbreaking series.
According to the official logline, the show unfolds in a “posh gated community” nestled in “one of the most affluent African American counties” just outside Washington, D.C.
The teaser introduces the Dupree family, described as “powerful and prestigious” and the true embodiment of Black excellence in the lavish Fairmont Crest community.
“Your family rules this community,” one character declares in the teaser, while another boldly adds, “This is going to make history. How awesome is that?”
“Beyond the Gates” stars Clifton Davis and Tamara Tunie as Vernon and Anita Dupree, the family’s patriarch and matriarch.
Vernon, a “gentle, humble, and generous” former senator, is joined by Anita, a former singing sensation.
Their dynamic daughters include Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson (Daphnee Duplaiz), a “high-achieving and competitive philanthropist and psychiatrist” whose seemingly perfect life hides deeper complexities, and Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley), a “former model turned momager” who gave up her career for love and has always marched to her own beat.
Helmed by veteran daytime drama writer and showrunner Michele Val Jean (General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful), “Beyond the Gates” began production in November.
Initially announced in March under the title “The Gates“, Sheila Ducksworth, president of CBS Studios’ NAACP venture, expressed the show’s groundbreaking potential:
“This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television.”
With rich characters, juicy storylines, and Black culture taking center stage, Ducksworth added, “Beyond the Gates” promises impactful representation, which is a key focus for the venture.
