Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle Griner have joyfully stepped into parenthood!
The news broke on Friday, July 19, that the WNBA superstar, 33, and her wife welcomed their first child, a baby boy, on July 8.
In an exclusive interview with CBS Sports, the Phoenix Mercury player couldn’t contain her excitement.
“That’s my man. He is amazing,” Brittney shared with a proud smile. “They said as soon as you see them, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window. That’s literally what happened.”
Their newborn son, whose name remains under wraps, weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds, 8 ounces.
While Brittney is over the moon about her new role as a mother, she also faces the bittersweet reality of leaving her baby boy to head overseas for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
“It kind of sucks because I have to leave, but at the same time, he will understand,” she said.
Preparing to represent Team USA for the third time, Brittney will have plenty of photos to keep her company while she’s away.
“My whole phone has turned into him now,” she added with a laugh.
The couple, who have been married since 2019, previously shared their anticipation on Instagram with a joint post captioned, “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being.”
They used the hashtags “#BabyGrinerComingSoon” and “#July2024,” alongside pictures of their ultrasound photos.
The upcoming Paris Olympics mark Brittney’s first trip outside the U.S. since her release from a Russian prison, where she was sentenced to nine years for possession of cannabis oil.
She was freed on December 8, 2022, after serving 10 months.
“We’re just so grateful for this new chapter in our lives,” Brittney concluded, radiating happiness.
“This is just the beginning.”
Congratulations to Cherelle and Brittney Griner on their bundle of joy!
