Vybz Kartel is not only fighting for his freedom…he’s fighting for his life.
A private doctor notified authorities in a sworn affidavit that the musician’s Graves’ Disease and heart condition is worsening and if he does not undergo surgery soon, it could be fatal.
According to Dr. Karen Phillips, Vybz Kartel has a seven-year history of battling Graves’ Disease, a thyroid condition.
Despite medication, it has not gone into remission. He also suffers from two heart conditions and complications.
Born Adidja Palmer, the 47-year-old international music superstar, who was once hailed as the king of dancehall, has been incarcerated in Jamaica since 2011 on a murder conviction.
Kartel along with other men conspired to murder Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton, a 27-year-old businessman and music promoter based in the Kingston suburb of Portmore.
Burton was murdered while standing with friends along Walkers Avenue in the Gregory Park area of Portmore.
Following a 65-day trial, at the time, the longest-running criminal hearing in the history of Jamaica’s circuit court system, Vybz was found guilty.
Vybz Kartel maintains his innocence and is appealing the conviction to the United Kingdom’s highest court.
For the last week, Vybz has been in solitary lockdown 23 hours a day over an alleged cell phone infraction.
His Human Rights attorney Isat Buchanan said the singer is basically in a “brick oven.”
He’s in a cell, and if you can picture a brick oven, because that’s how those cells are built, the ventilation is next to none.
After a visit with Vybz Kartel on Memorial Day, Buchanan is extremely concerned about his well-being.
His neck was swollen, if you think of a shirt that is about 18.5 inches in the neck area, you couldn’t close the collar on his neck and that’s how bad it is in this moment.
His face is actually swollen. And one other thing.
He always wears glasses; in this condition, that causes his eyes to protrude.
