A tragic day unfolded in Winder, Georgia, as a shooting at Apalachee High School left at least four people dead and around 30 injured, according to early reports from local law enforcement.
The full extent of the injuries is still unclear, with authorities unable to confirm how many were caused by gunfire.
A suspect, who is of student age, has been taken into custody, though it’s yet to be determined if they are enrolled at the school.
As a precaution, all schools within the Barrow County School System went into lockdown, and a heavy police presence was dispatched across the district, though no other incidents have been reported.
Footage from the scene shows a significant response, including at least five ambulances and a medical helicopter airlifting one of the critically injured.
Some students were seen gathered on the football field, seemingly in prayer, as the community grapples with the tragedy.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, speaking at a brief press conference, did not confirm the number of casualties, describing the situation as “fluid” and urging for patience as the investigation unfolds.
Authorities first received a call about an active shooter at 9:30 a.m., and since then, special agents from the FBI have joined local law enforcement on the scene.
Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences on social media and has directed state resources to assist in the ongoing response.
He called on all Georgians to pray for the safety of those affected in Barrow County and beyond.
