Tina Knowles, mother to Beyoncé and Solange, recently shared a deeply personal story about her battle with breast cancer.
In a heartfelt interview with “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King, the 71-year-old revealed that she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer after missing her routine mammogram appointment, something many of us can relate to, especially with the chaos of the pandemic.
“I’ve always tried to take care of myself,” Tina shared, still in disbelief. “I just… was in disbelief.”
It all started when Tina missed her regular mammogram during COVID-19 and didn’t reschedule until last year.
When she finally went in, doctors found two tumors in her left breast—one benign and one cancerous.
Thankfully, the cancer had not spread, and doctors classified it as slow-growing.
This diagnosis is a powerful reminder of how easy it is to let important health appointments slip through the cracks.
The American Cancer Society recommends women over 55 get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years, and Tina’s story is a stark reminder that keeping up with those screenings can literally save your life.
Despite the delay, Tina was able to catch the cancer early, and after undergoing a lumpectomy in August to remove the tumor, she’s now cancer-free.
But it wasn’t just her doctors who helped her through this journey—her family, especially Beyoncé and Solange, were right by her side.
Tina recalls feeling nervous before surgery, but her daughters were there to lift her spirits.
“They started just joking with me,” she said, remembering how Solange played a viral video to get her laughing and out of her head.
The real tear-jerker came when Solange and Tina’s niece, Angie Beyincé, sang the song “Walk With Me” to her before surgery.
It’s a song about God’s protection, and Tina found comfort in knowing that, no matter what, she wasn’t alone.
“I went in there feeling just like God has got me,” she said, her voice breaking with emotion.
Her recovery wasn’t without its bumps, though.
Tina developed a serious post-surgical infection that nearly kept her from attending Glamour’s 2024 Women of the Year event.
But her family stepped in, with Beyoncé urging her, “Mama, you’re not yourself.”
Tina reflected on her hesitation to attend the event, saying, “A lot of my life, I just refused to be recognized. I would never take an award. I would never want the attention to me… and this was my saying, ‘I deserve this.’”
And as she spoke at the event, she shared how her daughters have always been her rock, saying, “That’s why when I said, you know, with them, I could get through anything, nobody knew what I was talking about.”
Tina’s story is a testament to the strength, faith, and resilience that carries us through even the darkest moments.
It also highlights just how important it is to prioritize our health and listen to the people who love us.
Now cancer-free, Tina is not just an inspiration to those who are battling breast cancer but also to anyone facing any challenge.
Her journey proves that with love, support, and faith, anything is possible.
