Just when the dust was beginning to settle, TV producer Jesse Collins confirmed in a recent interview that JAY-Z is responsible for selecting the headliners for the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Lil Wayne fans have been distressed since it was announced that Kendrick Lamar would headline the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans.
The legendary rapper took to Instagram on Friday to express that he was “broken” after being overlooked for the chance to perform in his hometown.
The decision also sparked a wave of backlash directed at JAY-Z, including from Nicki Minaj, who accused the Hip-Hop mogul of letting his ego and dislike for her, Drake, and Birdman influence the snub of Lil Wayne.
This reignited the conversation about how Super Bowl Halftime Show headliners are selected.
Jesse Collins, the executive producer of the Super Bowl Halftime Show, addressed the question in an interview with Variety, stating:
It’s a decision that Jay makes. Since we’ve been on board with that show, he’s made it every year, and it’s been amazing. He’s always picked right!
He added:
We love Wayne. There are always Vegas odds on who’s going to perform, but I think we’re going to have an incredible show with Kendrick. I know Kendrick is going to work exceptionally hard to deliver something amazing.
Nicki Minaj felt vindicated in her criticism of JAY-Z.
She retweeted an excerpt from Jesse’s interview, along with a laughing emoji.
I think it’s time everyone picked up their feelings, like Jazmine Sullivan told us to, and moved on from this!
