In a new interview with the BBC, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the writer and director of the hit Netflix series “Squid Game,” revealed he made no money from the first season.
In fact, he only agreed to do the second season, slated to premiere in December, because he needs the money.
“Even though season one was such a huge success, the system means that, honestly, I didn’t make much. So, I had to do season two to help compensate me,” he shared.
In addition to not making any money from “Squid Game,” Hwang Dong-Hyuk revealed he was under so much stress while filming the first season that eight or nine of his teeth fell out.

When you think about the amount of money Netflix made off “Squid Game” and the massive cash prize they gave away for the competition series spin-off, it’s heartbreaking to see Hwang’s struggles.
Hopefully, he doesn’t walk away from Season 2 empty-handed as well.
