Shakira’s hips don’t lie, but a Spanish prosecutor says her tax returns do and she should spend eight years in prison for it.
The Colombian singer, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is accused of failing to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014, but she claims she did not live in Spain during that period.
Shakira, who was an 11-year relationship with FC Barcelona star Gerard Piqué, purchased a home in Barcelona in May 2012 for her family.
Prosecutors in Barcelona have alleged the Grammy winner spent more than half of each year between 2012 and 2014 in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country.
The document proposes an eight-year prison sentence and a fine of 24 million euros ($24 million) if she is found guilty.
Shakira’s representatives responded to the accusation on Wednesday, saying the singer is “fully confident of her innocence” and she considered the case “a total violation of her rights.”
Reportedly, earlier this week, Shakira rejected a settlement offer from the prosecutor’s office to close the case.
She said she has paid the Spanish tax office what they said she owed, and she has no outstanding debt.
