President Joe Biden has decided to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, for illegal gun possession and tax evasion charges.

The announcement came on Sunday, December 1, marking a surprising change from Biden’s earlier promise to stay out of his son’s legal troubles.

“I believe in the justice system, but raw politics has infected this process, leading to a miscarriage of justice,” Biden said in a statement. “Once I made this decision, there was no reason to delay it.”

What Are The Charges?

The pardon covers Hunter’s gun and tax cases. In July, a Delaware jury found him guilty of illegally owning a gun in 2018 while dealing with drug addiction. The charges carried up to 25 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.

Hunter was also accused of not paying $1.4 million in taxes while spending heavily on luxury hotels, cars, and drugs. Although he offered to plead guilty, a plea deal fell apart, leaving him facing up to 17 years in prison.

President Biden Defends His Decision

President Biden said his son’s legal troubles were unfair and driven by politics.

He argued that people in similar cases, especially those who pay back taxes, usually avoid criminal charges.

“No reasonable person can look at the facts and think Hunter wasn’t singled out just because he’s my son,” Biden said.

He also accused some of his political opponents of pushing the charges to hurt him and his presidency.

“A carefully negotiated plea deal was derailed in court because of political pressure,” Biden added. “This isn’t just about Hunter — it’s about justice and fairness.”

Hunter Biden Responds

Hunter Biden thanked his father for the pardon and promised to use his experience to help others battling addiction.

“I’ve taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction,” Hunter said in a statement. “These mistakes have been used to humiliate me and my family, but I don’t take this pardon lightly.”

Hunter, who has been sober for over five years, is the first child of a sitting president to be convicted of crimes.

A Tough Call

President Biden had previously said he wouldn’t use his presidential power to help Hunter.

Now, he’s asking Americans to understand his decision.

“This is what any father and president would do,” he said.

The pardon has sparked heated debate.

Critics accuse Biden of abusing his power, while supporters say he’s standing up to unfair treatment.
