Hall of Fame center Alonzo Mourning, known for his dominance on the basketball court, faced a formidable opponent off the court: Stage 3 prostate cancer.
In March, Alonzo underwent surgery to remove his prostate following the diagnosis, and he now proudly announces that he is cancer-free.
He took to social media earlier this week and shared a post-surgery photo of himself and his doctor with the caption:
My health has always been paramount. Prioritizing my well-being is crucial in my life, and it should be prioritized in everyone’s life, especially for men.
Ensuring that I eat right, stay active, and most importantly, have regular checkups is critical to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Recently, I was diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer, and I am extremely grateful to say that I am now cancer free.
My journey to recovery has been tough, but I am thankful for the support of my loved ones and the amazing medical team that helped me through it all.
Men, we have to remember that early detection is key, so make sure to prioritize your health and get regular checkups.
Let’s continue to prioritize our health and well-being, and embrace a future filled with good health and happiness!

Alonzo Mourning is channeling his experience into advocacy, urging men to prioritize their health and undergo regular prostate cancer screenings.
In an interview with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Alonzo shared the gravity of the disease and the silent threat it poses.
“What scares me about this disease is that there are so many men walking around feeling great and have that cancer in them and they don’t know it,” he stated. “The only way to find out is to get their blood tested and get their PSA checked. There are 3.3 million men living in the U.S. with prostate cancer, and many don’t even know it. I was one of those guys.”
Alonzo Mourning’s journey began in 2021 when, aware of his family history of prostate cancer, he started seeing a urologist regularly.
This proactive approach included prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing and cancer screenings.
It was during one of these routine tests that concerning results prompted a biopsy in February, revealing the presence of cancer.
Fortunately, subsequent tests confirmed that the cancer had not spread beyond his prostate.
Reflecting on his ordeal, Alonzo emphasized the importance of early detection.
“Life was good and amazing for me, but had I ignored getting checked and let this go, the cancer would’ve spread through my body,” he admitted. “Unfortunately, as men, we don’t like to go to the doctor, but this is the only way to find out what’s going on in your body. Prostate and even colon cancer are silent killers and many men won’t get those diagnoses until it’s too late.”
Alonzo Mourning’s candid discussion about his health challenges aims to break the stigma surrounding men’s health issues.
“We live in a world where it’s taboo among men to talk about health issues. If I didn’t get routine checkups, I probably wouldn’t be here to talk about this. I want men to be proactive with their health,” he urged.
This isn’t the first time Alonzo Mourning has faced a serious health crisis.
In 2003, he underwent a kidney transplant, a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome life’s hurdles.
His latest victory over cancer adds another chapter to his legacy, not just as an athlete but as a beacon of hope and advocate for men’s health.
