‘Michael’ Surpasses $1 Billion Worldwide, Making Lionsgate History

Frens, the Michael movie just reached a milestone that few films ever achieve.

The Michael Jackson biopic has officially surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, making history as Lionsgate’s first film ever to join the billion dollar club.

The achievement also makes “Michael” only the second movie of 2026 to cross the $1 billion mark, following “Super Mario Galaxy.”

“Michael” Is Now Lionsgate’s Biggest Movie Ever

The Antoine Fuqua-directed film has earned $371.8 million domestically and $629.8 million internationally, bringing its global total to more than $1 billion.

The film officially crossed the milestone after opening in Japan, one of Michael Jackson’s strongest international markets, where it has already earned more than $35 million.

With this record-breaking run, “Michael” has now surpassed:

  • Lionsgate’s previous highest grossing film, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” ($865.2 million worldwide)
  • “Bohemian Rhapsody” to become the highest grossing musical biopic of all time
  • “Oppenheimer” to become the highest grossing biopic ever released

A Career Milestone For The Filmmakers

The success of “Michael” is also a career best for several key creatives behind the film.

It is now:

  • Producer Graham King’s highest grossing film
  • Director Antoine Fuqua’s highest grossing movie
  • The second highest grossing screenplay of John Logan’s career, behind only “Skyfall”

The Cast Behind The Billion Dollar Hit

Michael” stars Jaafar Jackson in his feature film debut as his legendary uncle, Michael Jackson.

The cast also includes Nia Long, Colman Domingo, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Juliano Valdi, and Mike Myers.

The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by John Logan, and produced by Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain.
