Jay-Z has filed a motion to dismiss the recently amended lawsuit naming him as a co-defendant alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs in a high-profile rape case.
The “99 Problems” rapper, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, claims the allegations are part of an “extortionate campaign” orchestrated by Texas attorney Tony Buzbee.
According to court documents obtained by Page Six, Jay-Z, 55, accuses Buzbee of launching a calculated effort to extract millions of dollars from him, regardless of the truth.
“That campaign was cynical and calculated to force payment of an exorbitant sum of money—Defendant would have to pay X millions of dollars irrespective of the truth, or else,” reads the filing.
The lawsuit, originally filed in October against Diddy, now implicates Jay-Z in allegations dating back to a 2000 party following the MTV Video Music Awards.
The plaintiff, referred to as “Jane Doe,” claims she was drugged and assaulted by both men when she was just 13 years old.
Jay-Z Challenges Allegations & Calls for Transparency
In the filing, Jay-Z describes the claims as baseless, asserting that Buzbee is hiding behind the plaintiff’s anonymity to push what he calls a “sprawling extortion saga.”
He also requested that Jane Doe’s identity be disclosed, arguing that her use of a pseudonym is unwarranted.
“These claims are not about justice for victims. Nor are they about giving victims of sexual violence a voice,” the filing states.
“Instead, they are merely the next chapter in Attorney Buzbee’s sprawling extortion saga—a saga whose aim is base and measured in dollars.”
Jay-Z asked the court to dismiss the civil lawsuit for “lack of subject matter jurisdiction” and cited the plaintiff’s failure to provide evidence supporting the need for anonymity.
Jay-Z Speaks Out
Jay-Z vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “heinous” and expressing heartbreak over the impact on his family.
“My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims,” he told Page Six.
“I mourn yet another loss of innocence. Children should not have to endure such at their young age. It is unfair to have to try to understand inexplicable degrees of malice meant to destroy families and human spirit.”
Diddy Denies Allegations
Diddy, who is also named in the lawsuit, released a statement through his legal team dismissing the allegations as false and accusing Buzbee of using publicity stunts to pressure celebrities into settlements.
“This amended complaint and the recent extortion lawsuit against Mr. Buzbee expose his barrage of lawsuits against Mr. Combs for what they are: shameless publicity stunts designed to extract payments,” the statement reads.
Diddy, currently incarcerated on unrelated charges, faces multiple lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct, including rape and trafficking.
His trial is scheduled for May 5.
