Gayle King became the talk of social media on Monday (April 14) as she boarded Blue Origin’s all-female space flight—and let’s just say, the memes had a field day.
The CBS News anchor looked visibly shaken as she climbed aboard the capsule on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, which launched from West Texas.
While her crewmates—including Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn—appeared excited, Gayle’s expression told a different story.

It didn’t take long for Twitter and Instagram to go in.

🎤 Gayle King Reacts To The Memes
“At that moment I was so afraid, I just wanted to get into my seat because I just wanted to let the training kick in,” Gayle said during a post-flight news conference.
“I just wanted to get inside the capsule and sit down,” she added. “So the process of walking up there was a little daunting for me.”
Although Gayle’s taking the memes in stride, they may have hit a little nerve.
In a video shared to Oprah Daily’s Instagram, she opened up further:
Now I’m hearing I’ve become a meme because my facial expressions, when I was walking on the bridge to get on the capsule—I don’t anymore.
I didn’t realize I was being photographed at that moment, nor did I realize that my expression looked so terrified. But I was. I was.
I just thought, I’m just going to go in and get in my seat and I’m going do this.
I knew I was always gonna do it, although we were told that if you’re going to back out, you have to do so before two minutes and 30 seconds.
You have to say, ‘I’m not going to fly.’ Well, I knew I wasn’t gonna be that guy, but getting on it was a little scary.
So the memes show that I was apprehensive.
I tell you—look at the picture when I got off the capsule. That’s the one that matters.
That’s the victory speech. I’m so glad to be back on Earth. ‘Welcome home’ has a new meaning.

🚀 Was The Blue Origin Space Flight Even Real?
Now, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that a growing number of folks online don’t even believe Gayle and the girlies actually went to space.
Especially, after this video from space was released on social media:
