Dave Coulier, the beloved actor who played the hilarious “Uncle Joey” on the hit TV show “Full House“, has recently opened up about his courageous battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

In a heartfelt interview with PEOPLE, Coulier, now 65 years old, shared the details of his unexpected cancer diagnosis and his determination to face this challenge head-on.

Daves’s journey began when a seemingly minor upper respiratory infection caused major swelling in his lymph nodes.

As the swelling rapidly increased, with one area growing to the size of a golf ball, his doctor advised him to undergo PET and CT scans, as well as a biopsy.

The results brought life-changing news – Dave Coulier had been diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of the disease.

“I went from, I got a little bit of a head cold to I have cancer, and it was pretty overwhelming,” Dave recalls.

But with the unwavering support of his wife, Melissa Bring, and his medical team, he immediately began to tackle the diagnosis with a positive and proactive mindset.

Dave Coulier’s openness about his journey is not just for his own benefit, but to inspire and encourage others.

“I’m going to meet this head-on, and I want people to know it’s my life. I’m not going to try and hide anything. I would rather talk about it and open the discussion and inspire people,” he says.

The actor has drawn strength from the resilience he witnessed in his own family members, including his mother, sister, and niece, who all bravely battled cancer.

“If I can be just 1/10th of a percent as strong as they were, then I’m going to be just fine,” he reflects.

As Dave navigates his treatments, which include chemotherapy, he’s been leaning on his sister Karen, a registered nurse, for support and sharing moments of levity.

“We’re making jokes about this. One of my jokes is in four short weeks I’ve gone from a Virgo to a Cancer. I’m a huge hockey fan. So when they said ‘You’ve got NHL,’ I thought, ‘I finally made it to the NHL,'” he quips.

Through it all, Dave Coulier remains focused on the positive, including the impending arrival of his first grandchild.

“I’ve got to teach him how to play hockey,” he says, radiating excitement.

Dave’s message to his fans is one of hope and encouragement.

“Take great care of yourself, because there’s a lot to live for,” he advises. “And if that means talking with your doctors or getting a mammogram or a breast exam or colonoscopy, it can really make a big change in your life.”

As the beloved “Uncle Joey” continues his fight against non-Hodgkin lymphoma, his unwavering spirit and determination serve as an inspiration to all who follow his story.
