What Is ‘Kokomo City’ About?

D. Smith hands over the microphone to four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City – Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell, and Dominique Silver – as they fearlessly dismantle the barriers within their profession.

With unreserved candor, the film pulsates with vitality, sensuality, adversity, and the invaluable wisdom gained through experience.

In her bold black-and-white feature directorial debut, edited and shot by Smith, this crucial portrait unveils her journey.

A two-time Grammy-nominated producer, singer, and songwriter, Smith also made history as the first trans woman cast in a primetime scripted TV show.

Executive produced by Lena Waithe, “Kokomo City” clinched the Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award, along with the Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary Section at the Berlinale.
