A Las Vegas family is demanding justice after 43-year-old father Brandon Durham was fatally shot by police in his home on November 12, 2024.
Durham called 911 for help during a home invasion, only to lose his life in a tragic encounter with responding officers.
The Tragic Shooting Of Brandon Durham
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Durham and his 15-year-old daughter were at home when he called 911, reporting that intruders had broken in and were shooting at his house.
Officer Alexander Bookman and two other officers responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, they observed property damage, broken windows, and heard screams coming from inside the home.
Officer Bookman kicked in the front door and discovered Durham wrestling with a woman, later identified as 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux, in a bedroom doorway.
Police said both were struggling over a knife.
Officer Bookman ordered them to drop the weapon before firing his gun, striking Durham.
After Durham fell to the ground, Bookman fired five additional shots, killing him.
Body camera footage shows the chaotic confrontation but does not clarify who held the knife when the shots were fired.
Boudreaux, who had broken into the home, reportedly told officers after the shooting, “You shot the wrong person.”
Police confirmed that she intended to provoke a deadly response, citing her suicidal intentions.
She now faces charges including assault, home invasion, domestic violence, and child abuse.
Family & Community Outrage
Durham’s family, represented by civil rights attorney Lee Merritt, is calling for Bookman’s immediate arrest.
Merritt released a statement demanding that Clark County District Attorney Steven Wolfson issue a warrant, arguing the officer acted recklessly and unjustly.
“Brandon Durham was a loving father and lifelong Las Vegas resident,” Merritt wrote.
“Officer Bookman had no legal justification for using deadly force. Any reasonable officer could have identified Durham as the homeowner and the suspect as the intruder.”
Durham’s ex-wife, Ailin Averhoff, described him as an exceptional father who prioritized his daughter’s milestones, never missing a single event.
He leaves behind his daughter Isabella, his partner Rachael Gore, and his stepson Branden.
Legal & Community Actions
Clark County’s District Attorney acknowledged that the investigation is ongoing and could take weeks, if not months, to conclude.
Meanwhile, Officer Bookman is on administrative leave pending an internal review.
The Durham family has launched a GoFundMe to cover memorial expenses and provide counseling support for his grieving children.
Activists are urging the public to contact District Attorney Wolfson to demand justice for Brandon Durham.
Call To Action
Attorney Merritt has issued the following demands:
- A meeting between DA Steven Wolfson and Durham’s family.
- Immediate issuance of an arrest warrant for Officer Alexander Bookman.
Supporters can contact the Clark County District Attorney’s Office at (702) 671-0978 or email steven.wolfson@clarkcountyda.com to push for accountability.
