7

Connecticut is the southernmost state in New England and one of the prettiest states in America, especially in the autumn. There is lots to see and do in the region, so you will have plenty to keep you occupied if you are lucky enough to be able to spend some time here. Don’t miss out on these 10 things to try when visiting Connecticut.

Yale University

One of the most famous sites in Connecticut is Yale University. This is one of the oldest schools in America and it caters to those intelligent enough to earn an Ivy League education. However, if you didn’t quite get the grades to study there, you can still pay a visit for the day to see this impressive university. You can take a trip here for free and it is worth it to see the stunning gothic architecture. Once there, you will also get to visit the world-renowned libraries and walk the hallowed halls of one of America’s top learning establishments.

Beaches

Kick back and relax while enjoying your trip with a visit to Connecticut’s famous beaches. There are miles of beautiful sands for you to enjoy. Choose from a trip to Hammonasset Beach State Park, the longest shoreline in Connecticut, or experience the stunning pink sunset at Walnut beach. You are spoilt for choice. Mark Twain’s House

Mark Twain was famous for writing novels, but did you know he spent several years living in Connecticut? His home in the early 20th century was a gorgeous gothic mansion that is open to the public for viewing. If you ever wondered how famous writers lived or where they lived, don’t miss the chance to see for yourself when visiting Connecticut. You can tour the house and the library and even take a writing workshop while you are there.

Chowderfest

If you are visiting Connecticut in the Autumn, then Chowderfest is not to be missed. It takes place every September and although it started as a small beachside event, it has grown larger over the years and is now celebrated as a major culinary festival. You can sample the delights of 40 different types of chowder from restaurants around the country and vote for your favorite. Don’t worry if you can’t be there for September; there is a sister event called the Great Mac and chili fest that is held in the winter.

Connecticut Wine Trail

You don’t have to visit Italy or Australia to visit wineries. Connecticut is famous for its wine making too, and the state boasts over 20 wineries located over the entire state. Passports are offered at various locations so that you can keep track of which ones you have visited and what your favorite wines are in each place.

Essex Steam Train

The Essex steam train is a nostalgic trip not to be missed by train lovers or anyone who wants to enjoy a fantastic experience and a majestic view. This train travels over the Connecticut River valley and has been creating memories for passengers since 1971. Enjoy a lovely three-course dinner as you ride along or prolong your experience by combining your train trip with a riverboat ride.

Elizabeth Park Rose Garden

Nature lovers should not miss this beautiful rose garden while they are in the state. It is the oldest rose garden in America and the third largest in the entire country. It is free to visit and open all year round so there is no excuse not to go. Visit when the roses are in bloom for the prettiest walk and memories you will cherish forever.

Carousel Museum

This is a must for the young and old alike, especially if you are into the nostalgia of the fairground and love carousels. You will enjoy riding colorful horses and seeing how they are put back together at the restoration workshop.

Mystic Seaport

This is the largest maritime museum in the USA featuring a huge collection of ships and boats and a replica of a 19th century seafaring village. The ships and houses have been painstakingly restored and this makes an excellent day out for all the family.

Gillette Castle State Park

It is unusual to find a medieval castle in America, but don’t let that stop you from visiting. This is one gorgeous building and, best of all, it is free to get into. It was originally opened in 1919 and the first owner of the castle was a well-known actor of the time who played Sherlock Holmes.

With so much to see and do in the great state of Connecticut, you will wish that you had booked a longer trip. Still, you can always come back next year.
