In a significant development in the ongoing Young Thug/YSL case, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville has been removed.
The decision was made by Fulton County Judge Rachel Krause, who issued her ruling on July 15, following motions submitted by attorneys for Jeffery Williams (Young Thug), Deamonte Kendrick, and attorney Kayla Bumpus.
Judge Krause acknowledged that while Judge Glanville could and would continue presiding fairly, the need to preserve public confidence in the judicial system necessitated his removal.
Consequently, she granted the motions to recuse Judge Glanville submitted by Kendrick and Williams.
However, she denied Bumpus’ motion to quash the show cause order and recuse Judge Glanville, deeming it moot.
Background & Reason For Recusal
Defense attorneys, particularly Young Thug’s lawyer Brian Steel, have been filing motions for months, claiming Judge Glanville’s bias.
The catalyst for the recusal requests was an ex parte meeting on June 10 between Judge Glanville, prosecutors from the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, and state witness Kenneth Copeland.
Initial recusal requests were denied by Judge Ural Glanville, prompting Kendrick to appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court.
Although the Supreme Court declined to consider it, they ordered another judge to review the motions.
Judge Krause was assigned to the case.
Attempts by Steel to recuse Judge Krause, citing Judge Glanville’s donation to her re-election campaign and their professional relationship, were also denied.
Current Status & Charges
At this time, it is unclear who will take over the case or when the trial will resume.
Young Thug faces several serious charges:
- RICO Violation: Young Thug was indicted by a Fulton County grand jury in May 2022, with additional charges in August. He and 27 others are accused of conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
- Gang Activity: Participation in criminal street gang activity.
- Drug and Gun Charges: Various allegations related to drug possession and distribution, as well as firearm offenses.
Prosecutors claim that Williams co-founded a violent gang called Young Slime Life (YSL) in 2012, associated with the Bloods gang.
The indictment details 191 acts from 2013 to 2022, allegedly committed to further the gang’s interests.
Notable accusations include threatening a security guard in 2015 and renting a car used in a gang-related murder.
