Vybz Kartel is back in the streets of freedom and focused on his overall well-being.
The Dancehall icon took to Instagram on Tuesday after his morning workout to share a few positive words.
In 2014, a Jamaican judge sentenced Vybz and three co-defendants to life in prison for the 2011 murder of an associate, Clive “Lizard” Williams.
However, on July 24, he walked out of the Tower Street Adult Correctional Facility in Kingston, Jamaica, a free man.
Kartel’s attorney, Isat Buchanan, fought fiercely to overturn the verdict, convincing the highest courts in Jamaica and the UK to order his release.
On July 31, while many were glued to the Jamaica Court of Appeal live feeds covering the decision on his case, Vybz Kartel was on the phone with his fiancée, Sidem Ozturk.
Speaking exclusively to FOX 5 New York’s Lisa Evers, Vybz recalled the details leading up to his release.
“She was like babe, I’m on my way to get you, and then when the verdict was read, she was like, ‘Baby, you’re free!'” Kartel recalled.
A member of his legal team soon texted him, saying, “Pack your bags.”
Less than 24 hours after his release, Kartel dropped a new 12-track mixtape titled “First Week Out,” which is already climbing the charts.
“We have albums worth of songs, a lot of writing about the situation, not about the situation, a plethora of lyrics,” Kartel shared.
For now, Vybz Kartel’s focus is on reconnecting with family, spending time with his sons, and recovering from the health problems that put his life on the line.
“I just want to say to the fans, thank you for the love, thank you for being there by my side, to my extended family, thank you for having faith in me,” Vybz said.
