The ever-busy Tyler Perry has officially kicked off production on his fourth film with Amazon MGM Studios, part of his ongoing four-picture deal.
The latest project, tentatively titled Sisters in Italy, marks a special milestone in Perry’s career as it’s the first film he’s directing that he didn’t write himself.
The screenplay is penned by Tika Sumpter and Kemiyondo Coutinho.
Perry is directing and producing the film, which features a star-studded cast including Sumpter (Sonic the Hedgehog 3), Bresha Webb (Run the World), EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg, Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), Godfrey (Regular Black), Giulio Berruti (Downhill), Edmond Layrea (The Blacklist), Sarayu Blue (Expats), and Justin Chatwin (Reagan).
A Personal Story Rooted in Family and Sibling Bonds
Inspired by Sumpter’s personal experiences as the youngest sibling, Sisters in Italy dives deep into the complexities of family and sisterhood.
The plot follows two estranged sisters who reconnect in Italy after their mother’s death.
The sisters are surprised to discover that their late mother owned a charming bed and breakfast in the Italian countryside.
While grappling with their relationship and deciding the future of the property, they receive a series of tasks from their mother—given posthumously—that push them to rediscover the importance of family and fully embrace life’s joys.
Tika Sumpter’s Heartfelt Tribute to Tyler Perry and Her Co-Writer
Tika Sumpter couldn’t hold back her emotions as she took to social media to express her gratitude to Tyler Perry for taking on this heartfelt project.
In her post, Sumpter shared how honored she was that Perry believed in her and the story, stating:
“I cry every time. I could not have done this without my badass co-writer friend and chosen sister @kemi_yondo! I love you to the moon and back… Tyler and Amazon got it done! It’s a miracle to get anything made in Hollywood, especially now.”
Sumpter’s enthusiasm for the film shines through, as she reflected on how much the project means to her, especially given its focus on the complexities of sisterhood and the beautiful Italian setting.
She added that working with Perry has taught her valuable lessons about cutting through the often grueling development process in Hollywood.

In addition to Tyler Perry via Tyler Perry Studios, the film’s production team includes Tika Sumpter herself, Angi Bones, Tony Strickland, and Will Areu from Tyler Perry Studios.
Kemiyondo Coutinho also joins as executive producer, making it a true collaboration of powerhouse talents both in front of and behind the camera.
As production moves forward, Sisters in Italy promises to be a heartfelt exploration of family, love, and self-discovery set against the stunning backdrop of Italy.
