Shanice Wilson took to social media on Sunday to share that she underwent a double mastectomy three months ago.
In a video posted on her official Instagram page, the 51-year-old singer, songwriter, and actress revealed that doctors had found DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), a very early form of breast cancer, in her left breast.
While documenting her journey, Shanice expressed, “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to face in my life. But I know God is with me, and everything is going to go well.”
In another clip, the singer confessed, “I wasn’t getting my mammograms and ultrasounds regularly because I was afraid. Then, I felt something in my breast… I went to the doctor to have a mammogram, and they said I had DCIS in my milk ducts, which is pre… they say… I don’t like to say the word… you know… it’s stage 0 cancer.”
After undergoing surgery, Shanice shared a video from her three-month follow-up, explaining why she opted for a double mastectomy.
“They told me they wanted to remove my breast… Since you’re going to remove one, you might as well remove both because I want them to be the same. I don’t want anything popping up later in the other breast. When they took everything out, they retested, and they said that I had stage one.”
In the caption of her post, Shanice wrote:
Happy Sunday everyone… God is a healer. So, 3 months ago I had a double mastectomy. I had a stage one, one-centimeter tumor in my breast.
Thank God I caught it early. I wasn’t ready to talk about it then, but I’m strong enough to talk about it now. Please everyone, get checked. Thank you @yahsherbalistjharrellsims for helping me with your herbs. @drleehealthtalk, thank you for helping me get through this journey.
Thank you to all my prayer warriors for keeping me lifted in prayer. Thank you @phildfish for sharing your mom’s testimony. Thank you to my friends and family for your support and prayers.
