Saweetie is of Filipino and Chinese descent so the acts of Asian hate across America, post-pandemic, hit different for her.
She said she was deeply affected by the video of the elderly Asian woman getting attacked in New York City.
It raised her concern for her family members, her grandmother specifically.
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, and Saweetie will be performing with Jhene Aiko on Friday for the AAPI Heritage Month special, “See Us Unite for Change.”
The special will be hosted by Ken Jeong, and it will air on Friday at 8:00 p.m EST on MTV.
Saweetie believes social media is making people more aware of how rampant Asian hate is, and she believes the end game is to educate those who were raised to hate.
