You may recall the Something In The Water Festival originated in Virginia Beach, however, Pharrell moved the festival from the city after the death of his 25-year-old cousin Donovan Lynch.

Donovan was fatally shot by a Virginia Beach police officer on March 26, 2021, after police claimed he brandished a handgun.

The thing is Donovan had a license to carry, so his family argues there was no reason to brandish the weapon.

Coincidentally, the officer who shot Donovan Lynch didn’t activate his body camera.

A grand jury cleared the officer saying the shooting was justified.

Donovan’s father has filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit.

City leaders pleaded with Pharrell to keep the festival in Virginia Beach considering the festival brought $24 million to the local Hampton Roads economy.

The Grammy Award-winning super producer said in a written response:

I wish the same energy I’ve felt from Virginia Beach leadership upon losing the festival would have been similarly channeled following the loss of my relative’s life.

I love my city, but for far too long it has been run by and with toxic energy.

Good for him!

Will you be attending the Something In The Water Festival this year?
