Coming 2 America is coming to Amazon Studios.
Paramount Pictures reportedly selling the highly anticipated sequel to the classic 1988 film starring Eddie Murphy in a deal worth roughly $125 million (according to a source).
Coming 2 America was slated to open in theaters on Christmas Day, but with the ongoing theater closures due to the pandemic it makes sense for Paramount to cut the film loose and give it to a streamer.
The deal has not been finalized as there are tie ins with McDonalds and whiskey brand Crown Royal.
In the sequel, written by Kenya Barris, Prince Akeem is set to become king of the fictional country of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America — a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle.
To honor the former king’s dying wish to groom his grandson as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America.
Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones are reprising their roles. The film also stars Jermaine Fowler and supporting cast includes Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, and Wesley Snipes.
Coming 2 America is expected to premiere on Prime Video on December 18.
