Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean of the Fugees delivered a heartfelt surprise tribute at the celebration of life service for Grammy-winning icon Roberta Flack on Monday afternoon at New York’s Abyssinian Baptist Church.

Fighting back tears, Lauryn Hill spoke about the profound impact Roberta Flack had on music and culture.

“Her existence was a form of resistance,” she shared, honoring the legendary singer-pianist’s legacy.

Hill’s presence at the service was unexpected but deeply meaningful.

The Fugees’ 1996 rendition of Flack’s classic, “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” became a defining hit, earning them a Grammy decades after Flack won Record of the Year for the same song.

“I adore Ms. Roberta Flack. Roberta Flack is a legend,” Lauryn said before delivering a moving performance of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.”

She then teamed up with Wyclef Jean for a stunning duet of “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” with the legendary Stevie Wonder joining in on harmonica.
