KiKi Layne recently stopped by “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and revealed she was broke when she booked If Beale Street Could Talk.
It was KiKi’s first film and her performance catapulted her career into the next stratosphere.
She shared how the film was truly an “on-time blessing.”
Wow. Looking at Beale Street…that was a dream come true and like the most on-time blessing because I was broke when I booked If Beale Street Could Talk.
Literally, they flew me out to New York and so you know when you go to check into a hotel they take your credit card and they put a hold on the card?
So, I gave them my card and they said, ‘Okay, we are going to put a $100 hold’ and I said, ‘Ooooh.’
I said, ‘Okay, let’s pray on that.’
Thankfully, we had it. But, I went up to my room and I checked my account and I had $114 total in my account.
So, now I only had $14 dollars available.
I don’t even think I’ve ever said this before. I literally showed up…that morning, I spent the $14 on breakfast.
So, when I showed up to my chemistry reading with Barry [Jenkins] and Stephan [James], who had already been cast, I had no money in my account.
