Janelle James, who stars as Principal Ava Coleman on the hit series, “Abbott Elementary,” stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Tuesday night.
Janelle shared that she knew the show would be successful when she read the pilot.
From the first time I read the pilot – I don’t know if you’ve ever read a pilot – they’re very hard to read because most of them are terrible.
And this one was hilarious! So, I knew it was going to go!
When asked who inspired her character as Principal Ava, Janelle shared:
She’s a combination of a lot of people – mostly my aunt who talks too much at the wrong time and says whatever she wants…a previous bad boss and me, of course.
Janelle James also talked about how she began doing stand-up comedy and how a call from Chris Rock changed her life.

All episodes of “Abbott Elementary” are now streaming on Hulu.
Without a doubt, it is one of the best shows on television and I’m super excited it has been renewed for a second season.
