Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail once again on Wednesday, September 18, a day after a federal judge in Manhattan ordered him to remain in custody at a Brooklyn jail while awaiting trial.
The rapper was first denied bail during his arraignment in Manhattan’s federal court on Tuesday, September 17, and remanded to jail.
On Wednesday, a different judge upheld the denial of his bail request.
Combs’ legal team swiftly appealed the decision and returned to court the following afternoon.
In a September 17 letter to the judge, Combs’ lawyers described the conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn as “horrific” and “unfit for pre-trial detention.”
During Wednesday’s hearing, Diddy’s’ defense team proposed that he be allowed to stay in his Florida home under strict conditions, including 24/7 surveillance with a pre-approved guest list.
He also offered to relinquish all access to his phone and the internet, committing to “do nothing but prepare for his trial,” according to his attorney, Marc Agnifilo.
However, U.S. Attorney Emily Johnson argued that Combs posed a significant danger and should not be released on bail.
She highlighted a 2016 incident where Combs, after brutally assaulting Cassie, texted her:
“Call me, the cops are here. I got six kids. Yo, please call. I am surrounded. You gonna abandon me all alone?”
Judge Andrew L. Carter, Jr. ultimately ruled against bail, stating, “There is no condition or combination of conditions that would ensure he will not obstruct justice or tamper with witnesses.”
“I’ve heard from the parties, and I find that the government has proven the defendant is a danger. The bail package is insufficient, even considering the risk of flight.”
Diddy, dressed in the same black shirt and gray striped sweatpants from his previous hearing, hung his head as he listened to the judge’s decision.
