Debbie Nelson, the mother of rap legend Eminem, has died at the age of 69.
TMZ reports that Nelson passed away on Monday, December 2, following a battle with advanced lung cancer.
News of her illness first surfaced in September.
Eminem, 52, and his mother shared a famously complicated relationship, but Nelson often expressed pride in her son from afar.
In 2022, when Eminem was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nelson shared a heartfelt video message.
“Marshall, I want to say, I could not let this day go by without congratulating you on your induction into the Hall of Fame. I love you very much. I knew you’d get there. It’s been a long ride, and I’m very, very proud of you.”
3 Facts About Debbie Nelson:
- Early Motherhood: Debbie became a mother at just 18, giving birth to Eminem, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, on October 17, 1972.
- Memoir Insight: She chronicled her tumultuous life and relationship with Eminem in her 2008 memoir, “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem,” sharing details about her challenging upbringing and experiences as a young mom.
- Legal Drama: Nelson filed an $11 million defamation lawsuit against Eminem in 1999 over lyrics in his debut album, The Slim Shady LP. Although she won the case, she was awarded only $25,000, with most of it consumed by legal fees.
In addition to raising Eminem, Debbie was the mother of Nathan Samra-Mathers and a proud grandmother to six.
Eminem’s father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., also passed away in 2019 at the age of 67.
Like his relationship with his mother, Eminem’s bond with his father was fraught with estrangement and tension.
Debbie Nelson’s life, while filled with challenges, was marked by resilience and her unwavering love for her children.
My sincerest condolences and prayers to Eminem, his brother, Nathan, and the Mathers family.
