D Smoke and Tobi Bamtefa have amazing chemistry on the hit Paramount+ show “Mayor of Kingstown,” and they recently shared how they learned a lot from each other.
D Smoke said when he first came to set, he already considered Tobi Bamfeta a beast of an actor by what he observed of his character, Bunny Washington, on the show.
He said he was shocked by Tobi’s British accent when they first met.
The first thing that shocked me was his British accent.
I was like, ‘Wait, hold on bruh!… You’re not from the states?…
D Smoke plays Raphael on the show, Bunny Washington’s cousin, and they meet up when Bunny is sent to jail.
D Smoke said he had fun playing Raphael and there is no acting class that could replace his experience on the show.
Tobi said had it not been for D Smoke he would’ve been playing a caricature in jail because D Smoke taught him “about the culture within African American communities and their relation to the wider society around them and how they interact.”
Tobi revealed that his younger brother first turned him on to D Smoke’s music, and now that they have a working relationship, he feels like he’s known him for ages.
D Smoke shared the clip to his Instagram of him and Tobi talking about working with each other along with the caption:
We tapped in! Rafael and Bunny fight to establish order in a prison post-riots. Of course, everything goes sideways and we’re left to improvise. Much love to @tasha4realsmith for giving me this opportunity to work with her, the gifted @tobibamtefa and many other brilliant actors and directors.
