Connie Chiume, the talented South African actress celebrated for her role as the tribal leader Zawavari in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther and its 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has passed away at the age of 72.
Chiume died on Tuesday at a hospital in Johannesburg, her family confirmed via social media.
The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
The South African government expressed its sorrow on X, stating, “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award-winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered.”
Born on June 5, 1952, in the Free State province of Welkom, South Africa, Gabisile Connie Chiume initially pursued careers in nursing and teaching—two of the few opportunities available to Black South Africans under apartheid.
However, her passion for the arts led her to join a traveling musical group in the late 1970s.
She then starred in the South African stage musical “Ipi Ntombi,” followed by roles in productions such as “Porgy and Bess” and “The Little Shop of Horrors.”
After the fall of apartheid, Chiume returned to South Africa and built an impressive career in television and film, culminating in her Hollywood debut as a tribe elder in the fictional kingdom of Wakanda.
Her performance in Black Panther was met with critical acclaim, leading to her reprisal of the role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
In addition to her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chiume appeared in the TV series “Heart of the Hunter” and “Soon Comes Night,” and was featured in Beyoncé’s visual album, “Black is King” (2020).
Connie Chiume is survived by her three children and five grandchildren.
Her legacy in the entertainment industry and her contributions to South African arts and culture will be remembered and cherished by fans and peers alike.
My sincerest condolences and prayers to all who know and loved Mama Connie.
May she rest in paradise.
