Chris Brown has taken a significant legal step by filing a $500 million defamation lawsuit against Warner Bros. and Ample, LLC over the documentary “Chris Brown: A History of Violence“.
The lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of Los Angeles on January 21, 2025, alleges that the documentary contains false and defamatory claims that severely damage Brown’s reputation.
Here’s everything you need to know about this unfolding legal battle.
The Documentary: Chris Brown: A History of Violence
Premiering on October 27, 2024, the Investigation Discovery documentary explores Brown’s journey from a troubled childhood to his status as a global pop icon.
Known for chart-topping hits like “With You,” “Forever,” and “Under the Influence,” Brown has long been a controversial figure.
The film delves into the cycle of abuse, posing hard-hitting questions about the cultural tolerance of celebrities with violent histories.
It features commentary from experts and survivors, aiming to shed light on the psychological toll of abuse.
However, Brown argues that the documentary sensationalizes discredited allegations against him.

Allegations & Defamation Claims
At the center of the lawsuit are claims made by Daisia Chantel Frank, referred to as “Jane Doe” in the film.
Brown’s legal team asserts that Frank’s allegations of sexual assault and evidence tampering were thoroughly discredited in court.
According to Brown, Frank has a documented history of domestic violence and had consensual interactions with him, supported by text and voice messages.
Despite being notified of the allegations’ falsehoods, Warner Bros. and Ample, LLC released the documentary, prioritizing sensationalism over accuracy.
Brown’s lawsuit accuses the defendants of knowingly spreading misinformation, damaging his reputation, and disrespecting genuine survivors of abuse.
Statement From Chris Brown’s Attorney
Levi McCathern, Brown’s attorney, emphasized the lawsuit’s focus on truth and accountability.
“Despite being provided with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information, knowingly disregarding their ethical obligations as journalists,” McCathern said.
“Their actions undermine not only Mr. Brown’s decade-long efforts to rebuild his life but also the credibility of true survivors of violence.”
Seeking Accountability & Supporting Survivors
In addition to seeking $500 million in damages, Brown has pledged to donate a portion of the settlement to survivors of sexual abuse.
He hopes the lawsuit will serve as a stand against the exploitation of misinformation for profit.
Brown’s 2017 documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome to My Life, remains his definitive account of personal growth and challenges.
