The New England Patriots have released Cam Newton and have named Mac Jones as their starting quarterback, according to a team source.

The news comes as a shock to many considering the Patriots signed Cam to a one-year deal in March worth a maximum of $13.6 million.

Cam Newton received a $2 million signing bonus and had a fully guaranteed base salary of $1.5 million.

He also had a $100,000 offseason workout bonus.

Now, the Patriots have flipped the switch by releasing Cam and leaving the door open for Mac Jones, who was drafted in the first round out of Alabama in April.

After Sunday’s victory over the Giants, Mac was asked about the starting quarterback position and he said:

I’ve gotten a lot of opportunities to play and I can improve on everything I want to improve on. So I think just learning from Hoyer, Cam, Jarrett, any one I can, and listening to Josh and his coaching, there’s a lot of work to do but I think I’ve made progress. But, honestly, the only thing that matters is today.

Adam Beasley gave some more scoop on the situation…
