A second autopsy report has shed light on the official cause of death of Fulton County inmate Lashawn Thompson.
We previously reported Lashawn was found dead in his cell covered in bed bugs and other insects on September 13, 2022.
His family believed the deplorable living conditions caused his death, but the original autopsy came back stating Lashawn’s cause of death was “undetermined.”
Former NFL star and activist Colin Kaepernick stepped up and paid for a second independent autopsy to be conducted.
The family held a press conference on Monday to reveal the second autopsy determined Lashawn Thompson died due to severe neglect, which ultimately led to him suffering a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.
The pathologist’s statement read:
It is the opinion of this forensic pathologist that Mr. Lashawn Thompson died due to severe neglect.
The combination of dehydration, rapid weight loss, and malnutrition complicated by untreated decompensated schizophrenia led to a fatal cardiac arrhythmia of Lashawn Thompson.
Had Mr. Thompson received adequate care during his incarceration at the Fulton County Jail then he would not have died at the time that he did.
Watch a portion of the press conference below.
The Thompson family is asking Fulton County D.A. Fani Willis to launch a criminal investigation into Lashawn’s death.
They are also expected to file a civil suit at some point.
Since Lashawn Thompson’s death, the agency has spent $500,000 to address the infestation of bed bugs, lice, and other vermin within the Fulton County Jail, and updated protocols for security rounds to include addressing sanitary conditions.

Shut the prison down, shut it down and do the necessary work to clean the prison and give those inmates a clean place to sleep, bathe, and everything else they need to do as human beings. They are incarcerated because they are being punished for the things they have done in the world. they are no longer free to do things at their own wheel. That is their punishment, however, not giving them adequate care is inhumane you are treating these people as less than human beings as less than animals. This should not continue to happen, and we need to change right now.
I agree💯💯
