Jessica Krug, a Jewish white woman from Kansas, has confessed she lied about being black her entire adult life.
I am not a culture vulture. I am a culture leech.
The confession was published on Medium.com on Thursday (September 3).
Jessica is an author and an associate professor at George Washington University, where she is touted as a historian of politics, ideas, and cultural practices in Africa and the African Diaspora, with a particular interest in West Central Africa and maroon societies in the early modern period and Black transnational cultural studies.
In the five-minute read, Jessica Krug blamed her childhood traumas and her mental health for her decision to “eschew my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim.”
Within her confession, Jessica said:
I have built my life on a violent anti-Black lie, and I have lied in every breath I have taken.
She went on to say:
I don’t know how to fix this. I am attempting to lay out a timeline of my deceit to better understand all whom I have violated and how, and to begin to imagine how to restore, to address, to redress… But I can’t fix this.
