Janet Jackson has officially apologized following backlash over her recent remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris.
The five-time Grammy Award-winning artist faced criticism for comments she made during an interview with The Guardian, where she discussed Harris’ family background and ethnicity.
Jackson’s manager, Mo Elmasri, clarified the situation, admitting that the singer had spoken “based on misinformation.”
In a statement to BuzzFeed, Elmasri expressed Jackson’s deep respect for Harris, emphasizing her accomplishments as a Black and Indian woman.
“Janet apologizes for any confusion caused and acknowledges the importance of accurate representation in public discourse,” Elmasri stated. “We appreciate the opportunity to address this and will remain committed to promoting unity.”
During the interview, Janet Jackson made a comment about Harris’ heritage, speculating that the Vice President might not be Black, referencing rumors she had heard.
When the reporter clarified Harris’ dual heritage—her father being of Jamaican descent and her mother South Asian—Jackson responded with more incorrect information, stating, “I was told they discovered her father was white.”

She admitted that she hadn’t followed the news closely in recent days.
These comments echoed a conspiracy theory that had been circulated by some right-wing figures, including former President Donald Trump.
Trump had similarly cast doubt on Harris’ racial identity during a recent presidential debate.
For clarity, Vice President Harris’ father, Donald Harris, is a Jamaican-American economics professor, while her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a respected scientist from southern India.
Both of Harris’ parents met as students at the University of California, Berkeley, and their rich cultural backgrounds have been a cornerstone of Harris’ personal and professional identity.
Janet Jackson’s apology comes with a renewed commitment to unity and the importance of accurate public discourse—a timely reminder in an age where misinformation can easily spread.
