Céline Dion’s battle with “stiff-person” syndrome has taken a turn for the worse as the singer no longer has control of her muscles, according to an update from her sister, Claudette.
What Is Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS)?
Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare, progressive syndrome that affects the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord.
Symptoms may include extreme muscle stiffness, rigidity, and painful spasms in the trunk and limbs, severely impairing mobility.
Spasms can generate enough force to fracture bone.
People with SPS often have heightened sensitivity to noise, sudden movements, and emotional distress, which can set off muscle spasms.
In December 2022, Céline Dion took to Instagram and shared her diagnosis in an emotional video.
The “My Heart Will Go On” singer said:
Recently, I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological condition called Stiff Person Syndrome, which affects something like one in a million people.
While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know that this is what has been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having.
Céline Dion also shared how stiff-person syndrome was affecting her health.
Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life. Sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.
What did Céline Dion’s sister say about her health?
In a recent interview with French publication 7 Jours, Claudette Dion shared that Céline no longer has control of her muscles.
Vocal cords are muscles, but so is the heart. That’s what gets to me. Because it’s one in a million case, scientists don’t have that much research on the topic, because it didn’t affect that many people.
Claudette also recognized the outpouring of love and support for her sister.
If you only knew how many calls we receive at the Foundation to hear from Céline.
People tell us they love her and pray for her. She gets so many messages, gifts, and blessed crucifixes.
She works hard, but she has no control over her muscles. What makes me sad, is that she was also so disciplined.
Please keep Céline Dion in your prayers.
