Kevin Durant (KD) has shocked the sports world by requesting a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, and Twitter is buzzing.
This news comes on the heels of KD’s friend and teammate Kyrie Irving opting in on a $37 million deal to stay with the Nets on Monday (June 27).
Which instantly made the Nets one of the teams favored to win the NBA championship next year, but KD flipped the script today, on the first day of NBA free agency.
KD is far from a free agent though, he signed a four-year contract extension with Nets in August 2021 that kicks in this week, therefore, the team that he is traded to will have him through 2026.
The four-year extension is worth $198 million.
Reportedly, the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns were two of the teams on KD’s wishlist, but the Nets are not obligated to honor any of KD’s preferred destinations.
The Nets plan to trade KD to the team that gives them what they consider to be the best deal.
Kevin Durant and Kyrie came to the Nets three years ago as free agents, and to date, they have only played in 58 games together.
There is speculation that Kyrie and KD planned this move because they haven’t had much communication with the team since Kyrie opted in.
But the logic behind two friends trying to make an NBA power play by one opting in and the other requesting a trade doesn’t make much sense.
Since the news broke, the Twitterverse has been buzzing with speculation, jokes, and think pieces on where Kevin Durant will play next season.
