Tony Terry recently recalled a time when R&B legend Anita Baker showed her generosity and support for him in a major way.
During an interview on The G Wade Radio Show, the R&B crooner shared how there wouldn’t have been a music video for his timeless hit single, “With You,” if Anita Baker had not blessed him with some “Sweet Love.”
She actually called my manager’s office. The secretary was gone from her desk and I happened to be walking by and I answered the phone and it was Anita Baker.
She was like, ‘I need to find Tony Terry.’ And of course, I said, ‘This is Tony.’
And she told me that she had heard my song and she hadn’t seen a video.
She was like, ‘Why not?’ I told her the label didn’t think it was a hit record and we hadn’t shot a video and we weren’t going to do one.
She was like, ‘What? I’m going to send you this money and I need you to shoot a video.’
She sent me $50,000. And she connected me to Blair Underwood, who made his directorial debut shooting that video.
So, if you’ve ever seen the ‘With You’ video it’s because Anita Baker saw fit to give me the money.
