A Community Officer Steps Away From The Badge

After nearly three decades of service, Officer Tommy Norman has officially announced his retirement from the North Little Rock Police Department.

The news comes just one week after his arrest in connection to what the department described as a domestic violence incident.

Norman now faces a charge of third-degree domestic battery.

Despite the controversy, his announcement quickly became a major talking point, especially given his long history of community-focused policing and the impact he’s had in North Little Rock.

Tommy Norman’s Career And Community Legacy

Tommy Norman first joined the force on June 15, 1998.

Over the years, he built a reputation for practicing a compassionate and hands-on style of policing that focused heavily on community engagement.

Instead of staying behind the wheel of his patrol car, Norman often walked the streets, talking with residents, listening to their needs, and bridging the gap between law enforcement and the people they serve.

That approach didn’t just resonate locally.

Norman’s work gained him global recognition, leading to nearly four million followers across social media platforms who tuned in daily to see his acts of service and uplifting community moments.

Many North Little Rock residents credit Norman with changing the tone of policing in their neighborhoods, saying trust and communication grew stronger because of his presence.

His Official Retirement Statement

In a heartfelt statement released to the public, Norman expressed gratitude to the department and to the community he served for 27 years:

After 27 years, I’m announcing my retirement from the North Little Rock Police Department.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the citizens of North Little Rock for almost three decades.

I look forward to continue serving the community in a different capacity.

My motto has always been ‘if you show up, come back’ and I’ll continue to come back for a community I now consider family.

I want to express my gratitude to my brothers and sisters in blue who I developed a special relationship with during my career.

Please be safe and remember this, your badge should have a heartbeat, not an ego.

Godspeed!

What He Said In His Retirement Video

Along with the written statement, Tommy Norman shared an emotional video on Instagram from the same parking lot where his career began in 1998.

In the video, he opened up about the weight of his decision, the lessons he’s learned, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

Norman said, “I feel like I did not let the community down. I feel like I did my part. I also feel that the badge did not instill love into me. I instilled love into the badge.”

He went on to add that although he’s leaving law enforcement, he has no plans to disappear from the community he loves.

“Today I hang up the uniform, but I don’t hang up my heart,” Norman said.

“Now I get to go out and prove to myself and others that you don’t have to be a police officer to make a difference.”
